The Revolutionary Benefits of Molecular Hydrogen

Have you heard of Molecular Hydrogen? Is molecular hydrogen good for you? Let’s learn more about this gas, its uses and its revolutionary benefits.

What is molecular hydrogen?

This is probably the first question to come to mind. Molecular hydrogen is a gas, known as H2(g). This basically means that two hydrogen atoms (H) are bonded covalently together. Because of this, they form a molecule; H2 is also referred to as molecular hydrogen.

Does our body need hydrogen?

Hydrogen is the third most common element in our body and is an important part of tissue function. It even plays a vital role in our DNA structure, making hydrogen indispensable to human life. Water, which we all know has the formula of H2O, is the most common source of hydrogen for humans. Hydrogen is the main building block of water, which is in turn the most common and important substance in the human body. We make hydrogen in our digestive system, but age and digestive dysfunction can decrease our own production.

Molecular Hydrogen benefits:

You may be wondering how molecular hydrogen differs from plain water. The main difference is in its formula- water has the addition of oxygen. This binds the hydrogen and it is not free. H2O has functions too, but free H2 is a gas. Molecular hydrogen, or H2 gas, is a small, neutrally charged molecule that has the ability to cross our cell membranes and the blood-brain barrier. This allows it to access DNA and the mitochondria within a cell, where it can take on protective action. Molecular hydrogen has many proven health benefits, such as having selective antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, anti-obesity, and anti-aging effects. Here are a few to note.

  1. As an antioxidant: Hydrogen gas has powerful antioxidant benefits and has been shown to protect our cells. Specifically, inhalation of H2 gas has been shown to suppress and heal brain injuries through these effects.
  2. H2 Supports your body’s antioxidant system: H2 helps your body’s natural antioxidant system by signaling pathways associated with the prevention of disease.
  3. As an Anti-inflammatory: In animal studies, hydrogen gas has been shown to be extremely anti-inflammatory. Studies show H2 decreases inflammation in human organs and tissue.
  4. As pain relief: The effects of molecular hydrogen therapy on patients with rheumatoid arthritis have shown a significant decrease in pain. The reduction in oxidative stress from the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of this gas results in pain relief.
  5. As muscle protection: In an animal study, hydrogen water prevented muscle wasting in mice that had muscular dystrophy. Hydrogen also boosted their natural production of glutathione. The effects of hydrogen on athletes show an increase in ability to recover and repair tissue. Improving performance and energy.
  6. Balancing the blood’s pH: Hydrogen water has shown to have an alkalizing effect in the blood. This is a big benefit to people who are extremely active because extreme activity can cause metabolic acidosis, which can cause premature muscle cramping. This effect also is important for those who have chronic disease, decreasing oxidative stress in the body.
  7. Effects on cell modulation: Hydrogen affects our cells and helps them maintain homeostasis and healthy modulation. Through healthy gene expression and cellular metabolism, hydrogen positively affects many levels of cellular processes.
  8. Hydrogen is Neuroprotective: Hydrogen has shown to help reduce damage to the brain in Parkinson’s patients. It’s also shown to have neuroprotective properties because it fights oxidative stress and inflammation, improving repair and function of neurological pathways in the brain and body.
  9. Protection against Metabolic Conditions: Studies have found that hydrogen increases insulin sensitivity, decreases blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. This makes hydrogen a potential therapy for fighting obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndromes.
  10. Boosting your Mitochondria: Being the powerhouse of your cells, your mitochondria is responsible for your energy levels day to day. Clinical studies on hydrogen-rich water show that it improves mitochondrial function.
  11. Protection against DNA damage: H2 has shown to significantly protect DNA against radiation damage by scavenging hydroxyl radical formation
  12. Calming Allergic Reactions: Studies on animals have found that hydrogen can calm allergic reactions. It seems to do so by modulating cell processes and restoring homeostasis.
  13. Cancer Protection: Hydrogen appears to be protective against cancer since it can protect against oxidative stress and damage to the DNA. Hydrogen has also helped reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.
  14. Protecting Organs: Hydrogen has been shown to offer protection against damage to various organs, including the brain, pancreas, heart, liver, eyes, and lungs. It is believed to be because of hydrogen’s anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and oxidative stress fighting effects.

Molecular Hydrogen Therapy- How you add it to your health plan:

In clinical studies, molecular hydrogen is administered via-

  1. Inhalation via a nasal cannula
  2. Drinking water that contains the dissolved H2 gas (known as hydrogen infused water)
  3. Bathing in hydrogen water
  4. Intravenous administration of hydrogen saline
  5. In hyperbaric hydrogen chambers

The most common is inhalation via cannula from a home hydrogen producing machine, drinking hydrogen water you can make from your machine, or by Hydrogen tablets that dissolve in water.

Side Effects

Hydrogen is naturally produced by our intestinal flora when digesting fiber. A study from the University of Florida and the Forsythe Institute of Boston, Massachusetts confirmed that hydrogen produced from bacteria exerted therapeutic effects. They discovered that by reconstituting intestinal microbiota with H2, they produced E. coli, but not H2-deficient mutant E. coli. This was protective against Concanavalin A-induced hepatitis. Other studies also show that bacterially produced hydrogen from acarbose administration is therapeutic. Studies such as these not only suggest the therapeutic action of molecular hydrogen, but also demonstrates its safety.

Hydrogen is natural to our bodies, and we are exposed to it on a daily basis. Hundreds of human studies have shown that inhaling hydrogen gas, at an amount greater than what is needed for therapeutic use, is well-tolerated by the body, with no toxic effects. In some people, it has been reported that hydrogen resulted in loose stools, and in rare cases, hypoglycemia with people that are diabetic. Besides this, no negative effects have been reported for hydrogen.

Many of my patients are using molecular hydrogen for it’s therapeutic benefits. I am seeing improvements in diabetic markers and inflammation markers. Many report sleeping better, having improvements in anxiety, muscle recovery, and brain function. We have not seen any side effects that have been mentioned.

The bottom line

It seems that molecular hydrogen restores healthy processes throughout the body, which makes it a good idea for just about everyone to consider taking, especially if you have a chronic disease, or you are a high performing athlete.
